2.
next time you're alone with your lover,
look deep into their eyes
they might ask you what you're doing
and scrunch their brows
they might crinkle their nose
and tip their head
impatiently.

Tell them to wait.
watch the ribbons in their irises,
the milky muddle of color near the peripheries,
watch the little broken bridges of fibers
that once let the light walk right up to the pupils
and shrink them with a mischievous touch.

then, take their hand after a time
and hold it close to your chest
like you would the rest of them.

there is a phenomenon yet to be explained which occurs
when two people in love stare into each others eyes.

Whether it be the consequence of the brain's altering the heart's rate
so as to be more compatible with its mate,
or a mere matter of involuntarily mimicking the behavior
of something it trusts,

their hearts will begin to pump
at the same cadence as the other
and the rates will continue altering
until unison is achieved.

It is thought that we may approximate
the heart rate of our partner
because we are familiar with their breathing
and have acquired the ability to copy it
exactly.

while i myself am fond of practical theories
i do like to think
it is only the murmuring of quiet conversation
of two hearts wondering at the other.

EDIT: AAAAAAA QQ thank you all so much for the Daily Deviation. I honestly thought I was finished after I got my first one, but then I saw the flood of watchers and favorites and my heart kinda stopped 'cause i knew it could only mean one thing. ^^ thank you so much!!!

Daily Deviation

It's an interesting composition for a poem since it reads so easily without the breaks, but I it was quite lovely to read. Thanks for sharing and congrats on the daily deviation.

Absolutely amazing work. I love to learn how the human mind and body work but this was more than that... The way you mixed your knowledge with such beautiful ideas was worth the read. Congratulations too!

Omg. This is awesome and beautiful and one of those mind-blowing phenomena ^.^
...stupid but kinda honest question, does it work if I stare into the eyes of my cat? Or are smaller mammals' heartrates generally faster and it wouldn't be safe to change that?

Sorry to barge in uninvited (hello, by the way ^^), but I happen to know that this sort of works with dogs. Not sure about the heart rate, but there are studies which found that when a dog and their owner gaze into each others' eyes for a while, it releases hormones that make both sides feel trust and love. It's the same brain reaction as when humans look into the eyes of family members/lovers.

With cats, they generally don't like to be stared at; they think it's very rude. (Since they can already see things extremely well from the corners of their eyes, cats nearly never look at each other directly. That focus is for prey.) I found that cats love it most when you slump down and just throw little side glances at them from narrowed, very nearly closed eyes. Mine usually jump into my lap and cuddle when I look at them like that for a while. Or I get little nose kisses. Nose kisses from cats are the best. :meow:
(not like dog kisses. So sloppy >.<)

no question is a stupid question dear ^^ I'm not exactly sure, however, I would guess sadly not, as I theorize that the adjusting of the heart's rate, while not a conscious effort, still relies largely on the brain's ability to observe the breathing of another and subconsciously slow or speed up its own heart rate. I don't think smaller domestic animals are cerebrally developed enough to observe a human and then glean enough information from what they observe to know at what rate the heart needs to beat. It's just a theory though, so if you decide to try it, tell me if it works! ^u^ I am sure, however, that larger animals might react to this phenomenon. Horses do something vaguely similar called "sharing breath", which is when they get close enough that they're breathing part of the exhale of the other horse. I wouldn't know if this means that their hearts sync while they're doing this, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case^^
